WELCOME!
My name is Shari Marcely and I am the PE and Dance teacher here at Centennial ECE-5th. I’m the one in the hallway that seems to have a perma-grin pasted on my face because for the eleventh year, I have the best job in the school (and quite possibly in the world) and no one has figured out that I’m getting paid every day just to work with the incredible kids and crew found at this great school!
Every once in a while your student may be coming home and starting a sentence with, “Mrs. Marcely said. . .” This newsletter is the place you will find out that MOST of what they are telling you is true! If however, you have heard something about some ‘crazy driver” in the gym or the 99 year old teacher in charge of PE and Dance, then I have NO idea what your kid may be talking about this time! ;)
Anyway, we have a lot of new and exciting programs and activities for our crew this year. This is the place you can try to keep up with everything we are trying to do and accomplish in the gym this year.

Ever hear a story at the dinner table and wish you could be a fly on the wall at school sometimes? Well, now you can!! If you can share your information (email/text number) I can send pictures of the funny or amazing things your child may have done in class that day directly to the source- YOU! Imagine seeing that “monkey hang” your child performed in PE and sharing the picture with others while your child shares the excitement at the dinner table or next family function- PRICELESS!!

pHYSICAL eDUCATION/Dance Overview/gradesAs you may already know, your student will have Physical Education/Dance and the other Enrichment classes once or twice a week (on a 8 day rotating schedule) for 50 minutes. Dance and Physical Education time is split 50/50 over the year. Every enrichment opportunity looks differently in PE and Dance, so there will not be set dance days or set PE days or even half PE and half dance every day, but will vary by activity and by grade band however, overall the time is split down the middle with many activities overlapping and accomplishing both objectives.
Students K-5 will receive 3-5 grades in Physical Education and Dance with every report card. Outside of fitness testing, grades in class depend on two factors: student behavior and student participation. Students will be expected to follow directions, to participate to the best of their ability, to show good sportsmanship, to use appropriate safety skills, and to respect the teacher and other students. Physical education not only teaches the psycho-motor domain but the cognitive and affective domains as well. My goal is to have every student experience success. A student does not have to be the top athlete or best dancer to earn the top grade in my class, but they do have to work hard every day to improve. They also have to be the kind of teammate they would like to have on their own team, ergo good sportsmanship and teamwork will also be necessary to achieve the highest grade in my class, as well. |
student responsibilitiesYour student (no matter what age/grade) is responsible for bringing tennis shoes every day that they are scheduled for PE. Also, if your child likes to wear dresses or skirts to school it is very helpful to have them wear shorts underneath. Their PE schedule is different every week, but is consistent over a six day rotation, so they are told to get to know that schedule and even if they wear boots or sandals to school, they are expected to bring tennis shoes to school in their backpack or a bag.
parent responsibilitiesIf there is a time when your child can not participate due to injury or illness please send a note to the school, otherwise the student will be asked to perform to the best of their abilities that day.
